Our Services > Cardiology Services

Rutland Regional Medical Center provides state of the art Cardiology services to the community and surrounding areas that begins in the Emergency Department and continues onto our inpatient cardiovascular nursing units. When necessary, patients are referred to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory for special heart procedures and ultimately to our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for continued support and education.

The Cardiologists and Emergency Department’s highly trained physicians and nurses treat cardiac emergencies such as heart attacks, evaluation of chest pain, heart failure and rhythm disturbances by providing the latest technology to diagnose and treat these conditions. Our Testing Center staff can perform EKGs, nuclear stress tests, echocardiograms and Holter monitors.

Our health team works with surrounding major medical centers to coordinate care in the event that further treatment is needed. In the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Cardiologists working with specially trained nurses perform diagnostic heart catherizations. During this procedure the hearts blood vessels and valves are visualized and information about the heart’s strength is measured. In addition, permanent pacemakers and defibrillators or AICDs are inserted for heart rate control and to help manage rhythm disturbances. Elective cardioversions are performed when specific irregular heart rhythms need to be restored to normal.

Patients needing admission to the hospital for continued heart care may be admitted to Intensive Care Unit or the  Progressive Care Unit or for overnight observation on 3 North. These units are specially designed with heart monitoring called telemetry and are staffed by trained cardiac nurses. A cardiac nurse Case Manager works with the cardiologists to help manage and coordinate your care. Cardiac Rehabilitation Services includes a nationally recognized and certified program designed to identify and  modify cardiac risk factors. This program is overseen by a cardiologist and is staffed with experienced cardiac nurses to help patients after heart attack, heart surgery, angioplasty/cardiac stenting and for patients who have angina. In  addition there is a Maintenance Program for those who have completed cardiac rehabilitation.

Rutland Regional Medical Center’s dedication to the diagnosis, treatment and continued heart health of the community  is reflected in the commitment of our nationally recognized Cardiologists who hold faculty appointments at the  University of Vermont and Dartmouth medical schools and our skilled nursing staff.
