Biography

Dr Lighthart is the head of our Joint Replacement Team and is an expert in primary as well as complex and revision hip and knee replacement surgery. He recently helped lead the outstanding team of practitioners and staff at Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic and Rutland Regional Medical Center to achieving a designation as a “Blue Distinction” center of excellence for total joints. He has extensive training in hip and knee surgery including minimally invasive surgery, partial knee replacement, hip resurfacing, anterior approach hip replacement and two incision hip replacement, hip and knee arthroscopy and complex reconstruction of the hip and knee.

Drew is a skier, snowboarder and fly fisherman and former NCAA collegiate football player. He grew up in Buffalo New York, went to Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania and then returned to Buffalo for medical school. After that, he spent 6 years training in orthopedic surgery at Union Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins University and The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He then spent an additional year receiving fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery at Rush University and Central Dupage Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Rutland, Vermont. He is dedicated to the treatment of injuries and degenerative conditions utilizing the outstanding resources available to him and his team at Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic and Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Lighthart says, “I believe it is important to individualize care and treat the patient as a whole and not just as a problem or set of problems. My goal is to eliminate pain, restore function and get patients back to their usual activities with as little discomfort, down time and disruption of their lives as possible. Advanced techniques including minimally invasive surgery, multimodal pain management and accelerated rehabilitation protocols allow me to achieve these goals. I enjoy the diversity of patients that I get to treat and I work hard in partnership with my patients in helping them achieve the best possible outcomes.”
