New Procedure for Women With Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
Aug 30, 2006
Endometrial Ablation
Rutland, VT – One in every five women experience heavy menstrual bleeding. In fact, heavy menstrual bleeding accounts for 30% of hysterectomies performed in America each year. But now there is a more effective treatment for women who experience heavy periods – a one-time minimally invasive surgical procedure called Endometrial Ablation. It gives women the opportunity to end years of suffering in one day.
The non-invasive procedure uses a Gynecare Thermachoice balloon, which is inserted into the uterus without any incisions. Then the balloon is filled with fluid and inflated to fit the uterus. When inflated the balloon is approximately the size of a quarter. When the treatment is completed, the fluid and balloon are removed. Nothing remains inside the uterus. The 30-minute procedure is hormone free, and can be performed under local anesthesia.
“This will offer women an option for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. It will be an additional opportunity for women to exercise their option for treatment choice for this common medical disorder,” said Dr. Daniel Foley, OBGYN.
Gynecare Thermachoice has been used to treat over 350,000 women in the last six years.
Endometrial Ablation is for women who haven’t gone through menopause. The procedure is not recommended for women who may want to become pregnant. Talk to your gynecologist if you would like to learn more about this procedure.
