RRMC Earns Blue Distinction® Center’s+ Designation

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont (Blue Cross) has selected Rutland Regional Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee/Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery. This designation is part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated healthcare facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies with input from the medical community.

Rutland Regional Medical Center is currently the sole Blue Distinction® Center+ for Knee/Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery in the state of Vermont.

2025, High Performing for Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report

US News Maternity Award logoU.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, has named Rutland Regional Medical Center as a 2025 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care. This is the highest award a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care annual study. Rutland Regional was the only hospital in Vermont to attain this recognition.

Additionally, Rutland Regional was one of only 118 hospitals nationwide to be named a 2025 Maternity Care Access Hospital, which is a hospital that offers essential maternity services to underserved communities. This recognizes hospitals serving communities that would be in danger of becoming a maternity care desert.

2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™

Patient Safety Excellence Award logoRutland Regional Medical Center has been recognized as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. This means Rutland Regional is among the top 5/10% in the nation for patient safety. Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:

  • In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (approximately 52% less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 56% less likely)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 67% less likely)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (approximately 71% less likely)

This achievement along with their 5-Star in Outpatient Total Hip Replacement reflects the organization’s dedication to clinical excellence and distinguishes Rutland Regional Medical Center as one of the nation’s leading hospitals for outpatient joint replacement. Rutland Regional is also the only hospital in Vermont and New Hampshire to receive the Outpatient Joint Replacement Excellence Award distinction.

This is the highest distinction a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings. Rutland Regional was one of only two hospitals in Vermont to achieve high recognition for both Hip and Knee replacement.

American College of Surgeons Recognition

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) has recognized Rutland Regional Medical Center, as one of 78 ACS NSQIP participating hospitals that have achieved meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2022. As a participant in ACS NSQIP, Rutland Regional is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that assesses patient safety and can be used to direct improvement in the quality of surgical care.

Rutland Regional is among a select group of hospitals that has achieved a meritorious composite score in either an “All Cases” category or a category which includes higher risk cases (“High Risk”). Risk-adjusted data from the July 2023 ACS NSQIP Semiannual Report, which represents data from the 2022 calendar year, were used to determine which hospitals demonstrated meritorious outcomes. Rutland Regional has been recognized on both the “All Cases” and “High Risk” Meritorious lists.

Rutland Regional Medical Center has been recognized as a Joint Replacement Excellence Award™ recipient for five years in a row (2019-2023) by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients. Other awards include:

Rutland Regional is the only hospital in Vermont to receive the America’s 100 Best Hospital for Joint Replacement award. The hospital also was recognized for the following clinical achievements:

American College of Radiology Center of Excellence

This designation recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).

National Safe Sleep Certification

Cribs for Kids gold award logoRutland Regional Medical Center was recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program for reaching the “Gold Safe Sleep Champion” designation for their commitment to best practices and education on infant safe sleep. The Gold Safe Sleep Champion level is the highest designation available.

Gold Seal of Approval® from The Joint Commission

Joint Commission Award logoThe Joint Commission recognizes Rutland Regional Medical Center with its Gold Seal of Approval® for its dedication to continuous compliance with the joint Commission’s State-of-the-Art standards. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated Rutland Regional for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. The Gold Seal indicates that Rutland Regional meets the Joint Commission’s rigorous performance standards in delivering quality, safe care. The Gold Seal is an internationally recognized seal of quality.

Accreditations

Rutland Regional Medical Center is accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (TJC) and is licensed by the State of Vermont.

The hospital is a not-for-profit institution with membership in the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems, the American Hospital Association, the Association of Community Cancer Centers and the Voluntary Hospitals of America-New England.

Rutland Regional has also been granted the distinction of being a Rural Referral Center by the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) because of the severity of cases treated and the specialized physicians available to treat those cases. Rural Referral Centers must meet stringent quality, volume and medical staff specialty requirements.
