Rutland Regional Names its 2019 Physician and NP/PA of the Year

Each year Rutland Regional Medical Center recognizes a Physician and a Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or other Advanced Practice Provider whose contributions to our community, staff, and patients represent the highest ideals in healthcare. We are pleased to announce that our 2019 Physician of the Year is Stanley Shapiro, MD, FACC, FASNC and 2019 NP/PA of the Year is Michael Vooris, PA-C.

Following a nominating process, the awardees are selected based on the following criteria:

  • The nominee must demonstrate dignity and respect toward staff and patients and excellence in clinical care.
  • The nominee is a credible role model professionally and personally to his/her community and to other health professionals.
  • The nominee is directly and effectively involved in public service and/or activities that enhance the quality of life in communities.
  • The nominee must support the shared vision and values of the Rutland Regional Health Services.

stanley shapiroDr. Shapiro joined Rutland Regional as a Cardiologist in 1998. He earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in history from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and Medical Degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Metropolitan General Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease with the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Burlington, Vermont. He is Medical Director and Section Chief of Cardiology, Past President of the Medical Staff (2016-2018), Member of the Medical Management Committee, and RRMC Medical Staff Scholarship Committee Member. Dr. Shapiro is board-certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease, and a Diplomate with the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology.

Shapiro’s colleagues have shared the following: “Dr. Shapiro consistently serves as a role model for other physicians by always showing sincere respect for patients and colleagues alike. His leadership in developing the Rutland Area Medical Community Scholarship underscores his commitment to helping others further their goal of pursuing a career in healthcare. He deeply cares about our community and is invested in the success of our hospital.

michael voorisMichael Vooris, PA-C has been a Physician Assistant with Rutland Regional Medical Center since 2009. He started with Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic and joined the Emergency Department in 2011. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English with a biology minor, from Houghton College in Houghton, New York and a master’s in physician assistant studies from Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and has been practicing in the healthcare for 14 years.

Mike’s co-workers had this to say: “Mike is an excellent clinician who understands the importance of communicating thoroughly and effectively with his patients and peers. He mentors other physician assistants and completes all his tasks with great care and skill. Mike is also active in organizations outside the hospital like Great Strides, an annual walk that supports the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.”

They will both be honored at a special event on March 29, 2019.
