Rotary Club of Rutland Announces Nursing Education Scholarship

The Rotary Club of Rutland has established a 2020 scholarship award for local students pursuing a career in healthcare with a preference toward a nursing degree or LNA licensure.

The scholarship is predicated upon the desire for the Rotary Club of Rutland to fund a meaningful award to demonstrate the Club’s sincere commitment to the encouragement and enrichment of education in the healthcare field.

Rotary was founded on the concept and recognition that the vocational diversity of its members would be able, through service above self and fundraising, to improve the human condition in their communities and the world. For more than a century, respect for all vocations has remained a core value in Rotary.

With the onset of the current shock of the COVID-19 pandemic the public has realized an increased awareness of the critical importance of medical care and the heroic role nurses play. Without an increased number of nurse educators in Vermont over the next decade, medical care could be compromised,” said Dick Rohe, longtime Rotary member and initiator of the scholarship.

Recently elected Rotary Club of Rutland President Will Gormly said, “The scholarship is a win-win. Not only does it encourage young professionals to stay and work in our community, but it will also help fill much-needed and vital positions within our community healthcare system.

In 2020 the Club will work with Rutland Regional Medical Center to award a $2,000.00 scholarship to a deserving candidate enrolled at Castleton University or Vermont Technical College pursuing a career in healthcare with a preference toward nursing, or candidates enrolled at Stafford Technical Center to achieve LNA licensure.

We are incredibly grateful to the Rotary Club of Rutland members for their generosity in establishing this scholarship award,” said Betsy Hassan, Chief Nursing Officer at Rutland Regional. “The Club’s commitment and collaboration will create an opportunity this year for local students to pursue their goal of higher education in the healthcare field,” Hassan continued.
