Rutland Area Medical Community Awards 2022 Scholarships Announced

RUTLAND, VT – Members of the Rutland Area Medical Community recently awarded six $2,000 scholarships to local students pursuing a career in healthcare. The scholarship program has been made possible through the generosity of Rutland area physicians, retired physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

The Rutland Area Medical Community scholarship is intended to stimulate the region’s best and brightest students, encouraging them to continue their education in the field of healthcare. The scholarship awards are aimed at creating opportunities that empower recipients to achieve excellence in education. Eligible candidates include high school seniors, local college students or Rutland area medical community employees who are working toward furthering their goal of a career in healthcare.

In 2022, the volunteer scholarship review committee awarded six scholarships based on the outstanding applications received.

This year’s recipients include Joshua Edgerton (Vermont Technical Center); Crystal Hartman (Community College of Vermont); Kaitlin McCarthy (St. Joseph’s College of Maine); Colin McLeish (Geisel School of Medicine/Tuck School of Business, DHMC); Molly Pfenning (Castleton University); and Brittni Racine (Walden University).

In its sixth year, the scholarship program received an overwhelming response from a wide variety of qualified candidates across the region once again this year.

“The pool of applicants was outstanding once again this year. With 67 applications, the ability to award only six scholarships was very difficult,” said Dr. Stanley Shapiro, Co-Chair of the Rutland Area Medical Community Scholarship Committee. “Each application brought a great deal of pride to every member on the review committee."

The volunteer members of the Rutland Area Medical Community Scholarship Committee are Co-Chairs, Stanley Shapiro, MD, FACC, FASNC and Vic Pisanelli, MD, FACS; Sarah Bache, APRN; Brad Berryhill, MD; Matthew Conway, MD; Jean Corbett, RRT; Dan Mitchell, MD; Amy Pfenning, PNP and Matt Zmurko, MD.
