Published on March 27, 2025
RUTLAND, VT – National Doctors’ Day is celebrated annually on March 30. It is a day to honor and recognize the contributions of physicians in providing high-quality healthcare, and each year in late March the halls and breakrooms at Rutland Regional Medical Center are decorated with colorful drawings and messages of appreciation from hundreds of Rutland County students from kindergarten through 4th grade. This annual tradition is a creative and unique part of the hospital’s celebration of Doctors’ Day.
“It is fun to see folks pausing in front of some of these creative illustrations,” said Stephanie Czachor, Medical Staff Quality and Credentialing Specialist at RRMC. “We look forward to showcasing the drawings throughout the hospital, which generates enthusiastic and positive feedback from providers, staff, patients, and visitors.”
The Doctors’ Day appreciation drawings are facilitated by the hospital’s Marketing & Public Relations team with initial requests for artwork going to area school contacts in mid-February each year. This year, the hospital received drawings from eleven schools and collected close to 400 original pieces of artwork in celebration of Doctors’ Day. This year’s collection is available to view here: https://photos.rrmc.org/Doctors-Day/Doctors-Day-2025.
“These heartfelt illustrations from our area youth are truly appreciated,” said Dr. Phil Lapp, Vice President of Medical Affairs. “The drawings and messages are a delightful reminder that the unwavering dedication of our physicians touch so many lives throughout our community.”
At Rutland Regional, more than 167 physicians, supported by additional medical staff professionals such as advanced practice providers, serve the community with expertise in 41 specialty areas. In 2024, these providers were involved in the care of more than 318,800 RRMC patients, delivered 243 babies, and performed more than 5,050 surgeries. Additionally, hospital providers treated more than 32,400 patients in the Emergency Department.
National Doctors’ Day is celebrated annually on March 30 because on that date in 1842, Dr. Crawford W. Long, a physician from Georgia, first used ether anesthesia during surgery. Doctors’ Day itself formally began in Barrow County Georgia in 1933 and became a National Day of Recognition in 1991 under President Bush. The official symbol of Doctors’ Day is the red carnation because the color of the flower denotes love, charity, sacrifice, bravery, and courage, all of which are synonymous with the medical profession.
