A Creative Way to Celebrate Doctors’ Day at Rutland Regional Medical Center

RUTLAND, VT – March 30 is National Doctors’ Day and a day to honor and recognize the contributions of physicians. At Rutland Regional Medical Center, the recognition comes by way of over 300 elementary school children who send in original colorful drawings and messages of appreciation.

The drawings are then displayed throughout the hospital, in public spaces, staff breakout areas, and clinics, for all to enjoy. This annual tradition started at RRMC close to ten years ago and has become a creative and unique part of the hospital’s celebration of Doctors’ Day. Stephanie Czachor, Medical Staff Quality and Credentialing Specialist at RRMC is one of several staff members who helped to post the drawings throughout the hospital.

“Hanging 300+ drawings takes a long time,” said Czachor. “Not just because of the volume of drawings, but because we can’t stop ourselves from reading each submission and delighting in the creativity and heartfelt sentiments the students express.”

Requests for participation from areas schools begin in February when the RRMC Marketing & Public Relations team sends out requests to area school contacts. This year, the hospital received drawings from nine schools and collected over 300 original pieces of artwork in celebration of Doctors’ Day. This year’s collection is available to view in a special online photo album, sorted by school: https://photos.rrmc.org/Doctors-Day/Doctors-Day-2026.

“It really is something to see all of these colorful and creative works of art posted throughout the hospital each year,” said Dr. Michael DiMeola, Medical Staff President and Anesthesiologist at RRMC. “Each drawing is unique, some are hilarious, but all of them are heartfelt and enjoyed by everyone at the hospital, including our visitors and patients.”

At Rutland Regional, close to 225 physicians, supported by additional medical staff professionals such as advanced practice providers, serve the community with expertise in 43 specialty areas. In 2025, these providers were involved in the care of more than 322,780 patients, delivered 272 babies, and performed more than 4,911 surgeries. Additionally, hospital providers treated more than 33,863 patients in the Emergency Department.

About Doctors' Day

National Doctors’ Day is celebrated annually on March 30 because on that date in 1842, Dr. Crawford W. Long, a physician from Georgia, first used ether anesthesia during surgery. Doctors’ Day itself formally began in Barrow County Georgia in 1933 and became a National Day of Recognition in 1991 under President Bush. The official symbol of Doctors’ Day is the red carnation because the color of the flower denotes love, charity, sacrifice, bravery, and courage, all of which are synonymous with the medical profession.
