On Friday, February 2, Vermont State University’s Castleton Men’s Hockey team will host the third annual Breaking the Ice on Mental Health event as they take on Southern Maine in a 7pm game at Spartan Arena.

Head Coach Kyle Richards and his team are excited to partner with Rutland Regional Medical Center once again this year to raise awareness and support for mental health services.

Martha Coulter, Associate Director of Health and Wellness at Vermont State University’s Castleton campus is thrilled the team will host the Breaking the Ice on Mental Health event once again this year to raise awareness and funds for Rutland Regional’s outpatient Behavioral Health program which provides vital services for the community, including Castleton students.

Raising awareness and destigmatizing mental health is essential to encourage people to seek help. As the men’s hockey team highlights the importance of talking about mental health, the message encourages our students and other young adults to ask for help when they need it.

Sheila Sharrow, LICSW, Manager, Rutland Regional Behavioral Health (RRBH) believes the Breaking the Ice on Mental Health event is an important reminder that it is okay if you have mental health symptoms, and more importantly it is okay to seek resources and professional help. Mental health conditions can impact anyone at any time. We are hopeful that this event will help people to take healthy steps to improving their quality of life.

During the fall semester, the Castleton Student Wellness Center provided counseling to more students than it typically serves in an entire year. In other words, the number of students seeking counseling services continues to grow tremendously.

In addition, Castleton students are very fortunate to be benefitting from mental health workshops provided by Rutland Regional Behavioral Health on topics such as Depression, Anxiety, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and Navigating Problems in Relationships.

Rutland Regional Behavioral Health remains dedicated to providing the best care for each patient’s needs. Staff work closely together to encourage patients to address their symptoms in the healthiest and most effective ways possible, using evidence-based treatment and prescription protocols to facilitate the health of patients and our community.

The Breaking the Ice on Mental Health event continues to enhance collaborative programs provided by Vermont State University and Rutland Regional Medical Center, raising awareness and funds to enable expanded counseling and support for students in our local region.

So put on your green and join the Castleton Men’s Hockey team on Friday, February 2nd at 7pm at the Spartan Arena as they break the ice on mental health.
