“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill
As I attempt to capture the essence of volunteerism my words do no justice to those spoken before me; Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
Volunteerism is the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people in the community; it is a social responsibility far greater than any financial reward. In observing Rutland Regional Medical Center’s amazing volunteers this principle can be found woven throughout the entire Volunteer Services Department from the staff served to the patients and families impacted.
Volunteering can be seen as an act of self-care. Susan Albers Psy. D., psychologist for the Cleveland Clinic, says that volunteering can be great for a person's mental health. According to Albers, when you help other people, it activates the reward center in your brain and releases serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. This is why many people often feel better after volunteering.
Rutland Regional is the cornerstone of our community, offering excellent healthcare and a place for our community to come together to support staff and patients. Volunteers provide invaluable support enabling healthcare professionals to focus on delivering essential care. Here are some of the ways that volunteering makes Rutland Regional a better place:
National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers tackling society’s greatest challenges. This is a week to appreciate building stronger communities while being a force that transforms the world. Each year, we shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve. A time to celebrate and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, and voice to make a difference in our communities. Thank you, Rutland Regional Volunteers.
