Proctor Lady Phantoms Raise Funds for the Breast Care Program at the Foley Cancer Center

The Proctor High School Lady Phantoms Basketball Team recently presented a check for $1,973.25 to Breast Care Program at the Foley Cancer Center for the proceeds from the 2014 Lady Phantoms vs. Cancer basketball game. The funds raised through a variety of activities including raffles and a 50/50 are part of an ongoing effort of Coaches Lisa and Chris Hughes, the Lady Phantoms Basketball team and community supporters.

Now in its’ fourth year, Lady Phantoms vs. Cancer started as a way to honor community members whose lives have been touched by a cancer diagnosis. In the second year, a beloved member of the Proctor High School community, Paul Wager was diagnosed with cancer and proceeds were raised to establish a scholarship fund in his honor. The team plans to continue to donate to the scholarship fund and keep their contributions local.

“We are proud of our team,” says Coach Lisa Hughes. “We wanted to not only raise funds for this very important program, but also to help create more compassionate, caring and generous young people. We really think our Lady Phantoms vs. Cancer games have done that.”

Funds raised from the 2014 game will be used to improve the quality of life for women diagnosed with, undergoing treatment for and recovering from breast cancer and will fund services including support groups, complimentary therapies like Reiki and acupuncture and patient assistance funds.

“We are grateful to be designated as the beneficiary of this wonderful event,” said Allan Eisemann, MD, Medical Director of the Foley Cancer Center. “We are pleased the Lady Phantoms supports our efforts to provide quality care and comfort to patients and their families facing the challenges of cancer.”

“Gifts like this are important on so many levels,” said Rick Lovett, MD.  “The kindness shared through this project will be appreciated by our patients and the young men learn so much about helping others.”

Darn Tough donates socks to cancer patients

Cancer survivor, Jackie Dutil of Brandon, VT and Darn Tough of Vermont recently donated 200 pair of socks for cancer patients at the Foley Cancer Center. “While receiving chemo treatments at the Foley Cancer, I kept noticing two little words on the toes of my socks, ‘Darn Tough’,” says Jackie. “As a recent widow and cancer patient, it seemed like the reminder I needed in my life that, I was indeed, darn tough.” As a former patient, Jackie was inspired to make a meaningful gift to help and encourage other cancer patients facing the emotional and physical challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Thank you, Jackie and Darn Tough Vermont.
