Men to Men Cancer Support Group

This group meets online via ZOOM every fourth Wednesday from 5:30 to 7pm. The confidential meeting will be hosted by the group leader, Jim Russell. Email Jim and he will invite you to the next meeting. You may also contact the group via their hotline at 802.228.1179.

Men to Men (M2M) formed close to two decades ago as an advocacy and support group for cancer survivors and their loved ones. M2M provides a confidential, safe, and comfortable environment for members to support each other and help navigate the many facets of cancer care and management. We recognize that a diagnosis of cancer, no matter its form, is scary and that there are typically more questions than answers initially. It is important to remember that cancer is a manageable disease and to help you, M2M is here to provide education, share solutions, and offer encouragement to all who participate.

Connection to the Foley Cancer Center

The Foley Cancer Center at Rutland Regional is the sponsoring service line for M2M. Their expert team of physicians and staff are there to support the group by way of education, meeting room support, guest visits by physicians and more. The Foley Cancer Center offers a complete spectrum of care including cancer screening and diagnostic services that help identify signs of cancer in its earliest stages, when it can be most easily treated.

What will you learn?

The group is facilitated by survivors and attended by members in the community who are in various stages of cancer management and recovery. Some of the shared support and education include:

  • Preserving quality of life
  • Encouragement
  • Share solutions
  • Learning to prioritize
  • Advances in treatment
  • Access to literature
  • Shared decision making
  • Guest presenters
  • Help with depression
  • Group wisdom
  • Acceptance
  • Laughter

What is the program?

Each meeting begins with brief introductions or “check-in”. After checking in, the group spends time focusing on issues that might have come up for group members, especially for the newly diagnosed. Each evening also includes an educational component around a topic of interest which is occasionally presented by a guest speaker. At the end of the meeting, the group agrees on the topic for the next meeting and reconfirms the meeting date and location.

When & Where do we meet?

M2M meet every 4th Wednesday, 5:30-7pm in the CVPS/Leahy Community Health Education Center. Access to the conference rooms are via the employee entrance on the ground floor on the east side of the hospital.

How do I join?

All are welcome to any monthly meeting without calling or reserving in advance. Just walk in. We do encourage you to contact the M2M coordinator, Michele Pilz at 802.747.1693 if you have any questions and/or to clarify the meeting room location.

Support for patients and their families:

We understand that cancer affects more than the patient. It affects family members, spouses, children and loved ones as well. Though our primary focus is on the group member, we highly encourage spouses and other family members and/or significant others, to attend meetings. Often our topics include issues that are of universal interest and will benefit everyone involved. It is important to feel that you are not alone in this journey and that help, encouragement, and support is available.
