Our state-of-the-art 13-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is equipped to treat you or a loved one if you are critically ill.
Rutland Regional's ICU provides complex, specialized medical care and round-the-clock monitoring.
A board-certified critical care physician called an intensivist coordinates your care with the support of a specially trained multidisciplinary care team. Our intensivist has access to a range of specialists at Rutland and at our partner hospitals in the area to make sure that you receive the best possible treatment.
Our ICU is fully equipped with the latest technology and offers private rooms with windows, televisions and phones.
Having a loved one in the ICU can be overwhelming and stressful. In addition to providing the best critical care for our patients, we do everything possible to help families cope during a stressful time.
To maintain a healthy and restful environment for our patients, visitation is limited to immediate family and significant others. Children under the age of 12 are allowed to visit only with the approval of the patient’s nurse or charge nurse.
All patients have access to a phone and can make local calls; however, all incoming calls must be received by and transferred from the nurses station. Please limit the number of individuals calling and, if possible, choose one family spokesperson to receive and share information. Cellphones are prohibited in the ICU.
We offer a range of services for families, including:
Our ICU team is made up of expert physicians and healthcare professionals from a variety of specialty areas and includes:
Our intensivists are certified in critical care medicine and oversee the care provided to Rutland ICU patients. An intensivist may act as a primary physician, a consultant or an advisor to the primary physician.
Our nursing director is responsible for the overall activities of the ICU, 24 hours a day, and ensures that each patient receives high-quality, individualized care.
Our ICU nurses are specially trained to care for the critically ill, and many of our RNs are certified in critical care.
Our registered respiratory therapists play an important role in helping patients with breathing problems. In coordination with a physician, they manage ventilators, administer special breathing treatments, assist with breathing exercises and educate patients on how to maintain healthy breathing.
Our pharmacists assigned to the ICU are responsible for monitoring selected areas of a patient’s drug therapy. Prior to discharge, our pharmacists are available to assist patients and their families with questions about the medications they will be taking at home.
Our palliative care nurse assists patients and families in exploring their needs, goals and ideas about quality of life so that treatment decisions can be made in a way that supports patient and family values.
Our social workers provide emotional and practical assistance to patients and families.
Our physical, occupational and speech therapists assist with improving patients’ mobility, cognitive and speech function and ability to perform daily living tasks.
Our case managers are registered nurses who work closely with a physician to facilitate patient care and discharge needs.
Our dietitians assist staff in providing nutrition support for all patients – especially those who are not yet eating on their own.
