Arm & Hand Conditions We Treat

Hand and arm pain can have many different causes. At Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic, we provide treatment for common hand and arm problems such as:

  • Acute injuries, like sprains and fractures
  • Arthritis (a disease that affects the joints)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (a pinched nerve affecting the hand)
  • Tendinitis (inflammation of a tendon)

We also treat diseases and conditions including:

  • Ganglion cysts (a fluid-filled cyst, usually near the wrist)
  • Trigger finger (a tendon condition in the fingers that causes a locking sensation)
  • Skier’s thumb (injury in the ligaments of the thumb)
  • Bennett’s fracture (fracture to the base of the thumb)
  • Dupuytren’s contracture (abnormal thickening of tissues in the palm of the hand)

Diagnosing Hand and Arm Problems

Your hands and arms are complicated, made up of bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. If you’re having hand or arm pain, Rutland Regional’s highly trained experts will help you figure out the cause.

Your doctor may ask you questions about:

  • When and where your hand and arm pain is happening
  • Your medical history and any injuries you’ve had
  • Your lifestyle (like what sports you play or what you do for work)

Your doctor may also order diagnostic imaging tests to create a picture of your hand or arm. These may include:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • X-Ray
  • Ultrasound

Your doctor may also order neurological tests to study the health of your muscles and nerves, such as an electromyogram (EMG).

Anatomy of the Hand

Your hands are complex and versatile. They're strong and nimble, and can do very delicate movements. Let's look at the main structures of your hands so we can see how they do all the things they do.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Pain, numbness and tingling in your hand may be from carpal tunnel syndrome. It happens when the area around the main nerve to your hand is too tight. The nerve is called the median nerve. And the small space in your wrist where it passes is called the carpal tunnel.

Treatment for Hand and Arm Pain

Once doctors find out the cause of your hand or arm problem, the specialists at Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic will help you develop a treatment plan.

State-of-the-art treatments we offer include:

  • Physical therapy, like massage, ultrasound, or electric stimulation, to help you gain strength and relieve pain
  • Occupational therapy exercises to help you use your hand and arm more easily and get back to normal activities
  • Splinting (supporting your arm and hand with a device to keep it still)
  • Minimally invasive (arthroscopic) hand and arm surgery to surgically treat your condition with as little pain and interference as possible
  • The most advanced wound healing treatments (like electrical therapies and debridement) to help your hand or arm heal damaged tissue

No matter what treatment path you and your doctor choose, we are committed to providing top quality on-site and at-home aftercare through our Rehabilitation Care services.
