Most people experience heartburn or acid reflux from time to time and treat it with over-the-counter antacids. But 1 in 5 US adults suffers from GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), a severe form of acid reflux – a condition in which stomach acid flows up into the esophagus (the tube that connects your throat and stomach).
Treatments often include Proton Pump Inhibitor drugs (PPIs) or traditional surgery. Both PPIs and traditional surgical treatments have downsides, including medication side effects and the need for ongoing treatment or repeated surgeries.
Rutland Regional Medical Center’s board-certified surgical team now offers an alternative to traditional GERD treatment options, called the LINX Reflux Management System – also known as the LINX Procedure.
LINX is a minimally invasive treatment for GERD. Minimally invasive means that your surgeon uses smaller cuts (incisions) and that your recovery time is shorter than with traditional open surgery. The LINX device is a small magnetic band of titanium beads – about the size of a quarter.
During the LINX procedure, a surgeon places the device around the part of your esophagus that should be blocking acid reflux.
Once placed, the LINX device prevents stomach acids from flowing into your esophagus. The flexible band of beads expands when you swallow. After you swallow, the magnetic band contracts to keep stomach acids out.
The LINX procedure usually takes less than an hour. Many patients go home within 24 hours and eat without restrictions. Most no longer need daily prescription GERD medicines.
Studies show that – 5 years after a LINX procedure – 88% of patients reported no remaining GERD symptoms.
LINX works well for patients diagnosed with GERD (with pH testing) who are looking for an alternative to standard treatments. The most common GERD symptoms include heartburn and regurgitation. Some people also have problems swallowing, coughing, bad breath or nausea.
LINX is a surgical procedure with some potential risks, so talk with your doctor to find out if this treatment is right for you.
