A PET scanner uses safe radioactive drug tracers that allow the machine to see where parts of the body may be diseased. The PET scanner is combined with a computed tomography (CT) scanner that takes x-rays of the body, so that precise location of the abnormal area can be mapped, measured, and identified. The use of the PET scanner continues to expand significantly each year. Rutland Regional currently has a truck that comes two days a week, which has a PET scanner inside of it and parks outside our Foley Cancer Center.

The Foley Cancer Center physicians and staff reference PET scans daily for critical information that guides treatment decisions, such as determining a response to treatment or if there has been progression of disease. It is also becoming an increasingly valuable tool for our cardiology physicians. An onsite system will allow Rutland Regional to image for heart problems in ways that is currently only available at larger hospitals.

Enhancing Access to Care

Rendering of a PET Scanner

As Rutland Regional continues to focus on increased access to care, the new PET scanner will help to:

  • Reduce wait times for patient appointments
  • Improve the overall patient experience
  • Will enable better patient comfort and workflow efficiency

With increased access, Rutland Regional will have the capacity to support our oncology, cardiology, and neurology populations moving into the future so that patients won’t need to travel to get answers to their already challenging situations.

As Rutland Regional continues to focus on increased access to care, having a new PET scanner permanently installed will help to reduce wait times for patient appointments and improve the overall patient experience with better patient comfort and workflow efficiency.

This is our current fundraising priority, however we continue to raise funds in support of various hospital programs and services, including the Foley Cancer Center.
